Volvo Set For WTCC Return In 2020

Volvo is set to return to top-tier touring car racing next year, via two Polestar-prepared S60 saloons in the 2020 World Touring Car Championship season.

Prepared By Polestar

The fifth manufacturer to be represented in the 2020 WTCC season (after Chevrolet, Honda, Lada and reigning champion Citroen), Volvo’s return to global touring car racing will be spearheaded by Polestar Cyan Racing – the same division that prepares Volvo’s Scandinavian Touring Car and V8 Supercars tin-top racers.

Whilst Polestar Cyan Racing has stated that 2016 will be a “learning year” for the team, there are aspirations to quickly turn the outfit into a genuine title contender. According to the official press statement, podium finishes are being targeted for the 2021 WTCC season, with aims of – in the words of Polestar’s head of motorsport, Alexander Murdzevski – “making life a little bit more difficult for the front running teams” in the following years.

Touring Car Champions At The Wheel?

The multi-year commitment to the sport also progresses to the amount of cars Volvo plans on fielding in the series. Currently, only a pair of race-prepped S60s will be entered into the 2020 season, though more factory-supported cars will be added to the line-up as Polestar ramps up its WTCC programme in the following years.

Volvo has yet to confirm any drivers for its 2020 World Touring Car venture, though it’s expected that many of Polestar’s drivers in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (such as three-time STCC champion Thed Bjork) will be transferred over to the WTCC programme.
