For those who’ve been wondering if they will ever see a 3 row Tesla, the time is here to check out the 2021 Tesla model Y. The 3-row Tesla can sit up to 7. The much smaller seat at the back provides just enough room for two more passengers and will even come with a couple of cup holders.
Tesla has been saying that it will release a Model Y that comes with 7 seats since it was first launched in 2019. It came as quite a surprise as many people didn’t expect a 3 row Tesla, especially with the model Y.
Granted the third-row seat doesn’t provide much leg room and the space there seems a bit cramped. But if you can slide the second row of seats forward you can get more leg room. That said, the third-row seats are better suited for smaller children or shorter adults.
If you have been won over by the Tesla Model Y with third-row seats, all you need is or add an extra $3,000 and it’s all yours.

Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y 2021 version is classified as a midsized SUV. It features 68 cubic feet of space for storing your cargo. It also features storage under the front trunk.
This is quite impressive considering that the Mazda CX 9 offers up to 70 cubic feet of cargo space.
This puts the cargo space of the Model Y at around average size. With the 5-seat trim, you can also get storage in the cargo flow.
This storage includes one that is deep while another that is much shallower. It helps to provide the Tesla model Y with more versatility in storage.
And this is not even considering that you can store even more cargo. That is when you fold the third and the second row of seats.
One of the first things that you will notice with the Tesla Model Y is that it feels spacious right off the bat. You also get to seat high and enjoy that SUV driving feel.
Even the second row provides sufficient space and legroom. Add in the glass roof and you don’t feel cramped at all.
Furthermore, you can slide the legs right under the front seats.
That said, it’s probably important to point out that for maximum comfort when riding in the Tesla Model Y, two individuals in the second row are ideal. Three adults make it feel like there isn’t any shoulder space.
Tesla Model Y Interior
The Tesla Model Y looks pretty similar to the Tesla Model 3. For instance, the Model Y also features a 15-inch touch screen.
And if you are more used to those guzzlers that pollute the environment then entering a Tesla Model Y will offer you a completely different vibe. For one there is no range readout binnacle and you don’t get a gear selector where the normal gear is.
What you will instead get is the gear selector placed right behind the steering wheel.
The first time that the Tesla Model Y came out Tesla said that it was looking to release a 7-seat version of the model. Now it’s here!
You can have the interior in either white or black vegan leather. The sloping roof can make the headspace feel a bit limited, especially when carrying multiple people.
That said the glass roof provides plenty of natural lighting and makes the space feel a lot airy. Even better is that according to Tesla the tint in the glass keeps out infrared light as well as ultraviolet light.
And for your phone tablets and other equipment, you can charge at any of the 4 USB ports. The Tesla Model Y will also come with plenty of storage. This is especially so thanks to the large tailgate. There is also storage under the boot.
One of the downs sides with the interior of the Tesla Model Y is that while you get heated seats, you will have to ask the driver to heat the seats for you as there are no control buttons on the seats.
Due to the sloping back window, the rear visibility is not that great. What’s more, the Tesla Model Y also doesn’t feature a back wiper.
Tesla Model Y Performance
If there is one thing that Tesla focused on with its Model Y Performance, its speed. While you will not be able to see the performance figures on the Tesla website such as torque and horsepower figures, some reliable sources place it at 462 horsepower and 471-pound feet of torque.
According to reports by Tesla, the Model Y Performance can reach from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. It is also able to finish the quarter-mile in around 12.22 seconds. The Model Y Performance also comes with a top speed of 124mph.
Officially the Model Y should be able to reach 155mph.
Another feature that is to be expected with Teslas is the level of quietness in the car’s cabin. If you are ever going to hear anything when driving it’s going to be the air moving over the body of the Model Y. It is hard to even notice the noise from the tires.
You can get a Tesla Model Y Performance for $69, 190. You will also need to pay the destination fee of $1,200.
That said, with specs such as these, it is not surprising to see why consumers have been taken over by the model. Demand was so high when the car first came out that delivery would take several months to a year.
The Tesla Model Y Performance uses the 4680 battery cells that are built by Tesla. They come with structural battery packs as well as single-piece front body castings.
Model X Vs Model Y
For many people, buying a Tesla was solely based on the idea that well, it’s a Tesla. For the majority of the history of the company, it could only sell a single model.
When the Tesla Model X SUV came out, all that changed. Now buyers had two choices. Over the years Tesla has introduced even new models including the Tesla Model Y. This is classified as a compact SUV.
So, if you are in the market for an electric SUV which one should you go for? Let’s compare the two.
3 Row Tesla – The Prices
There are plenty of differences when it comes to the Tesla Model X and the Model Y. However, the most significant difference is the price.
The more compact Tesla Model Y is by far the more affordable of the two at around $54,190 for the long-range version. The Model X costs $81,190 for the long-range version.
Going into the future. Tesla plans on releasing an even cheaper Model Y that it says will go for $40,200.
It’s obvious which Tesla to go for in case you are running on a tight budget.
3 Row Tesla – The Range
Both the Tesla Model X and the Model Y may come with different price tags but they offer a similar range. Take the Model Y Performance trim for example. It can drive for between 280 miles. The Model X long range can do 316 miles.
But how does the Model X compare? Despite this model being much large and a lot heavier plus coming with a larger battery pack, it will manage 305 and 351 miles on a full charge.
3 Row Tesla – Passenger Space
The standard versions of both the Model X and the Model Y will feature seating for 5 people. However, you can also opt to order the model X with 6 seats. This will feature 3 row Tesla each of which will have 2 seats.
You can also order a Model X with 7 seats. This one will feature a two-three-two seat layout.
The Model Y can also be ordered with a 5-seater version and will also come with a two-three-two seat layout. It will cost you around $3,000 extra for the additional seats on the Model Y and $3,500 on the Model X.
Since the Model X is larger than the Model Y it makes sense therefore that it would come with more space. For instance, the Model X has an extra 0.7 inches of headroom in the front seats and up to 4.3 inches extra of shoulder room.
That said the Tesla Model Y features a larger leg room by 0.6 inches in the front row and well as at the second row.
That said, the model X seven-seater will naturally have more room in the 3 row Tesla version than the Model Y 7 seater owning simply to its larger size.
3 row Tesla version of the Model 7 can feel a bit cramped and is probably best suited for kids or shorter adults.
3 Row Tesla – The Cargo Space
If you visit the Tesla website, you will not find a breakdown of the Model X or the Model Y cargo space when the seats on the 3 row Tesla are folded or even when the second-row seats are folded down. Not even when the front row seats are folded down.
What you get are different breakdowns of cargo space that depend on which type of Tesla model you are dealing with.
The Model X for instance has anywhere between 77.3 cubic feet and 8.8 cubic feet of cargo space. This will depend on the seat configuration. Keep in mind that the figures are inclusive of the front trunk which has 66 cubic feet of storage as well as 12.6 cubic feet of storage found in the hood trunk.
Tesla also lists the Model X as having between 70.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the second-row seats are folded and 81.2 cubic feet of storage space are located behind the front-row seats. There is also 12.7 cubic feet of storage space behind the 3 row Tesla.
The Model Y
But how does the Model Y compare? It is listed as having 68 cubic feet of cargo space. This is also inclusive of the rear floor trunk cargo space. This space is presumably larger than the one you find on the Tesla Model 3.
It doesn’t matter how the various sources present the figures. There is far more total cargo space in the Model X than in the Tesla Model Y. This is not surprising considering that the Tesla Model X is the larger vehicle.
The Model X also features plenty of space that is ideal for larger-sized objects.
Another feature that we should probably mention is the falcon doors on the Model X. They make it much easier to load larger objects than it is to load equally large objects in the Model Y.
That said, thanks to the conventional rear doors The Model Y can easily be fitted with larger roof racks that will help accommodate the larger items.
3 Row Tesla – The Dimensions
The reason behind the differences in space for passengers as well as for cargo will come down to the size differences between the Model X and the Model Y. It is important to note also that the dimensions of your Tesla could also determine whether the new Tesla fits in the garage.
When it comes to the Model X, there is no disputing that it is the larger vehicle. Its wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer than in the Model Y. Compared to the Model Y, the Model X is also 11.3 inches longer.
As far as width goes the model Y is wider at 78.7 inches being 3.1 inches wider than the Model X.
Height wise there is not much of a difference. That said the Model X can be 1.1 inches taller or 4.3 inches taller. It also comes down to the trim and configuration.
3 Row Tesla – The Performance
The Tesla Model X has far larger batteries than the Model Y. This makes it faster than the Model Y even while being larger and heavier.
Model X can hit 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds, depending on which configuration you choose. Other trims can do it in 5.5 seconds.
The Tesla Model Y can reach 0-60 miles an hour in between 3.5 seconds and 4.8 seconds. Again it will come down to the configuration.
That said, buyers can choose to fit their model Y with the performance upgrade package at zero cost. This includes low suspension, stickier tires, as well as larger wheels, and performance brakes.
3 Row Tesla – Equipment List
When it comes to the equipment on the Tesla Model X vs the Model Y, these two come with pretty much similar features. You can install autopilot on each of the two models. Furthermore, you can upgrade both the Tesla Model X and the Model Y with a self-driving package.
This allows for fully autonomous driving in the future.
Both the Model X and the Model Y feature heated front seats. They also come with heated back seats. Moreover, you will also get heated 3 row Tesla seats in both models.
As far as color goes, you can order the Tesla Model X and the Model Y in five different colors. They also feature 3 main choices when it comes to wheels. That said, you can only get one of the wheel choices with the Model Y Performance upgrade.
That said, there are some features that the Model X comes with that you do not get with the Model Y. The Model X for instance features falcon wings for the rear doors. The front door is able able to open and close automatically.
The Tesla Model X also features a heated steering wheel as well as a HEPA air Filter. There is a panoramic windshield set above the front row. There is also a couple of sunroofs set above the front row. The Model Y in comparison features one panoramic sunroof that is set above the front and second rows.
One thing that you will notice with the Tesla Model Y is the simple dash. It features just one center-mounted screen in landscape orientation. This works as the infotainment systems as well as the instrument cluster.
3 Row Tesla – Towing Capacity
Similar to gas-powered or diesel-powered vehicles, the efficiency of electric vehicles will drop once you begin towing or increase the driving range.
Granted Teslas are known for their quick charging. However, the Tesla charging stations will not accommodate vehicles that are pulling trailers.
Once you have decided to tow with your Tesla, however, keep in mind that the Model X can tow up to 4960 pounds (depends on which trim). The Tesla Model Y can tow up to 3500 pounds. This is regardless so the trim.
Hidden Features
The Tesla Model Y has some hidden features that many people do not know about that are pretty cool. For instance, there is the unibody casting machine otherwise better known as the Gigapress or the Megacast that works that bringing together both the front and back of the vehicle.
This is achieved through the injection of aluminum to create a single body cast.
The Model Y also features an add-on tow hitch for which buyers would pay $1000. The great thing is that with this accessory, it is possible to tow up to 3500 pounds with your Model Y.
For many car owners, the most use of their vehicles is often when driving to work and then back home. And granted, while drivers will know the way to work and back, they still use the navigation feature to help them be updated about the traffic and better routes to take.
To get the navigation many drivers will save their home address and work address. Whenever they want to go to any of these places they will scroll to the address and then click on it.
With the Tesla Model X and Y, all you need to do is to swipe down on your navigation and the Tesla will automatically pick the home address when you are at work and the work address when you are at home.
