The Jeep as a name and brand is a testament to human ingenuity and resolve. The second world war is perhaps the single biggest stain in the history of humanity but it was also a hotbed for innovation. The Americans needed something that could tackle the rough terrain of the various battlefields and they needed it quickly.
A deadline of 75 days was set and three companies out of an initial 135 competed for the rights to make such a car. The three companies would be American Bantam, Ford, and Willys-Overland Motors.
American Bantam would actually be the first one to build a prototype, called the Bantam BRC 40 but they would be forced to drop out early from the running as the Army felt it was too small a firm to manufacture such a vehicle in the numbers and timeframe they needed.
Their prototype would be submitted to Willys and Fords. Both of them would come up with their own version of this prototype – the Ford Pygmy and the Willys Quad. Willys’ version would gain approval with Ford staying on as a secondary manufacturer of the Willys Quad.
Funnily enough, these vehicles were not known as the ‘Jeep’ yet. Ford called their cars the Model GPW while Willys referred to their’s as the Model MB. The first vehicle to come with the official “Jeep” branding would be the 1945 Willys CJ-2A, where the CJ represented Civilian Jeep, and the previous models also began to be referred by this moniker. The Jeep, was an instrumental part in the Allied victory as it could reliably tackle almost any surface while serving many purposes from being an ambulance to actually being run on railway tracks with modified wheels.

How Reliable Is Jeep Current Line-up?
Even though the primary objective of the original Jeep was to be as good as possible reliability-wise in as many different types of conditions as possible, the commercial side of Jeep’s repertoire hasn’t exactly become a byword for reliability. It is not bad, but it hasn’t exactly been a trendsetter either. There have been some models that have been more reliable than others.

Jeep Cherokee Reliability
This is one of the models that has dragged the Jeep name quite literally through the mud over the last few years. We looked at various reliability scores to get the most comprehensive reading on how reliable the Cherokee model is and sadly the picture is quite grim. Reliability Index gives it a score of 150 which isn’t anything to brag about. Similarly, Consumer Reports gave the Cherokee a rating of 2 out of 5 stars which is one of the worst reliability scores for an SUV.
Looking at the finer details gives a much clearer picture of why the Cherokee has scored so low. The model which was first launched in 1974 has a long history of being quite troublesome when it comes to its transmission. Over the years, many Cherokee’s have been recalled leading to a further decrease in its reliability scores. The transmission issues have been fixed in the latest models and only about 3% of current Cherokee’s suffered from transmission issue. The current major point of failure is the electrics. The braking system, suspension, and engine are some of the other major sources of issues when it comes to the Cherokee.
It is not all bad news though as there is a silver lining to all this. While the Cherokee does have its issues, most of them tend to be minor and the average repair time is under 3 hours. These issues are also mostly of the type that can be fixed at home itself even if the owner is only reasonably handy at fixing a car. The average cost for repair is under £400 annually. It also won’t require severe repair any more than any other SUV. To sum it up, the Cherokee isn’t too bad bit isn’t too great either as far as reliability is concerned.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Reliability
The Grand Cherokee as the name suggests is supposed to be a step up from the Cherokee but unfortunately, the reliability doesn’t improve. In fact, it takes things on the reliability front a step down compared to the Cherokee. It scores lower on the Reliability Index with the axle and suspension being the primary source of unreliability.
The engine and electricals follow closely. The average cost of repairs is also slightly higher at £415 but repair times still stay under 3 hours which is quite good. The Grand also manages to last slightly longer than the Cherokee. The reason the Grand manages to score lower is because of the slightly higher prevalence of severe issues. This is especially true for Grand Cherokees from 2011.
The most recent models have become better but the age-old transmission issues are still quite prominent with electricals being almost as bad as the base Cherokee. The only solace is the repair time and repair cost which is still quite manageable and on par with some of the more reliable brands out there in the SUV segment.
Jeep Wrangler Reliability
We have one of the biggest injustices in the Jeep line-up in the form of the Wrangler. This is the only car in the current Jeep line-up that can trace its roots all the way back to the World War 2 era Jeeps and yet, the modern Wrangler is also the biggest source of shame for the Jeep brand. After years of getting negative reviews from customers, the Wrangler’s inadequacies were driven home with the Euro NCAP test at the end of 2018.
For the first time, the Euro NCAP awarded a car with a single star and the Wrangler has the infamy of being that car. The Wrangler is great at being an off-roader but it does not have the dependability that a Jeep branded car should have. Consumer Reports gave the car a score of just 12/100 in 2019 and it also featured on their list of least reliable cars.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler was particularly notorious for reliability issues with as much as 9 recalls in that year alone. Most of these recalls were related to driver aid systems such as cruise control. Another really negative aspect of the Wrangler is the repeated number of complaints with regards to the quality of welding in the frame.
In fact, in some Wranglers, it was so bad that the steering of the car got adversely affected. The average cost of repairs varies a lot across the years but they are all generally on the higher side with many being north of the £1,000 mark. The 2012 Wrangler is the worst of the bunch with average repair costs being almost £4,000 which is quite monumental.
Another notorious issue associated with the Wrangler is the “death wobble“. This was most commonly manifested in the 2007 model and usually resulted in heavy vibrations that originate from the front axle and can sometimes be so bad as to make steering difficult.
Jeep Renegade Reliability
With the Renegade, we have the new kid on the block. The Renegade model was first launched in 2015 which means that there isn’t a lot of historical data available for this model. The Renegade was also a clean slate for Jeep to start mending its reputation for not so great reliability but Jeep didn’t fully utilise it. Reliability scores for the Renegade have been only slightly better than the other models with a slightly longer history.
It is an average car with J.D. Power giving it a predicted reliability score of 2.5/5 for the latest model. The 2018 version of the Renegade is the one that has the most number of reliability complaints. This is a bit odd as the 2017 version was seen by many as the most reliable Jeep Renegade. The up and down trajectory with regards to the reliability of the Renegade points to the possibility of future models yet again suffering from a host of reliability issues.
For now, this model does not sit among some of the more desirable names in the world of SUVs. It is not the most popular Jeep either and that is why there isn’t a lot of data to get a concrete reading on the actual reliability of this model from Jeep’s line-up.
Jeep Compass Reliability
This is another car from Jeep’s line-up that has contributed to the brand’s image of being unreliable. J.D. Power and Associates gave it a reliability score of 2.5/5 which might seem average but is below par when compared to the scores that most SUVs get these days. Consumer Reports gave this model a score of only 1 out of 5.
They also placed the Compass on the bottom of their list of SUVs based on their reliability. Most of the issues arise from the transmission and some from the structural elements in the car. The brakes and suspension of the Compass have also been a source of problems on the reliability front.
The 2018 model has been the worst of the bunch with things improving for the 2019 and 2020 models. Of course, these cars are still relatively new and the scores could drop as owners drive them more but for now, it seems like Jeep has been trying to make their Compass models better and more reliable.
Jeep Renegade 4xe Reliability
This is the latest addition to the Jeep lin-up and as such it hasn’t had time for a lot of statistics to come in. It also happens to be the most different as it is a hybrid SUV and the verdict on acceptable levels of reliability in this segment is still out. For now, it is being predicted that the Renegade 4xe will have the same level of middling reliability scores as some of the other Jeep models.
The Reliability Of Jeep’s Rivals
Talking about the Jeep’s rivals does come with a few caveats. The different Jeep models in many ways are quite unique both in terms of concept and price. Yet, there are a few car models that can be considered as the primary rivals for Jeep. We will look at these one-by-one to see how the various Jeep models stack up against their biggest rivals.
Land Rover Discovery Reliability
One of the biggest rivals to many of the Jeep models is the Land Rover Discovery. It has been the go-to car for people looking for a serious off-roader. The axle and suspension on the Discovery is the biggest source of reliability issues with almost half of all reported issues being from this one component.
The electrical system and engine follow in a distant second and third place respectively. Suzuki Jimny Reliability
The Jimny, despite its more affordable price point, is also a very worthy contender for the Jeep models, especially for people on a tight budget. The reliability is actually better in terms of pure numbers. It spends just 2.36 hours off the road for repairs and the average annual cost of repairs is just £200 which is half of what the Jeep models come in at.
Once again, it is the axle and suspension that is the most prone to developing issues which makes it quite similar to the Jeep models and most SUVs out there. The Jimny’s polarising looks and barely adequate power are what holds it back when it is stacked up against the various jeep models.
Toyota Land Cruiser Reliability
The Land Cruiser is another highly sought-after SUV model that directly competes with the Jeep models and there is a very good reason for that. Toyota has a reputation for being quite reliable and the Land Cruiser is no different. It has a decent Reliability Index score of 167 and spends just 2 hours on average off the road for repairs.
The braking system is the biggest source of unreliability with the fuel system, axle, and suspension following closely. Land Cruisers also tend to last longer than the models in Jeep’s lineup. The only downside is that when it does require repairs, it can be a slightly costlier affair as the average annual cost of repairs exceeds the £500 mark.
BMW X3 Reliability
The BMW X3 is another one of the Jeep’s popular rivals. As far as reliability is concerned, it is a touch ahead as well with an average time of 2.69 hours being spent on average off the road for repairs. The engine happens to be the most common source of reliability issues followed by the axle and suspension on the X3.
As is common with German cars, the cost of repairs is certainly on the higher side with average repair costs per year being £552. German engineering is often seen as being of a higher quality and more reliable but this is mostly down to reputation as in the long run, maintaining a BMW X3 can cost more than any of the Jeep models.
